The War on Terrorism, often called the War on Terror, was the name given by the United States government under President George W. Bush to its worldwide campaign against al-Qaeda and other militant groups following the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001. It began with the invasion of Afghanistan to remove the Taliban, who had harboured al-Qaeda, and expanded into the Iraq War of 2003 and operations in several other countries. It brought new security laws such as the USA Patriot Act, the detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, and controversial practices including interrogation methods criticised as torture. Its results, costs and legality remain contested.
