Release of Simple English Wikipedia

18 September 2001

Simple English Wikipedia is an edition of Wikipedia written in Simple English, a form of English with a limited vocabulary, shorter sentences and simpler grammar. It is intended for children, students, people learning English and people with learning difficulties, and its approach was inspired in part by the idea of Basic English developed by C. K. Ogden. It was one of the first editions of Wikipedia apart from the main English one, and it has its own policies and editors. Its articles are usually shorter than those on the main edition, and complicated terms are explained or avoided. It is published at its own address and contains well over two hundred thousand articles.
