Six-Day War

from 5 June 1967 to 10 June 1967

The Six-Day War was fought between Israel and the neighbouring states of Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Tensions had risen after Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping, expelled United Nations peacekeepers from Sinai and massed troops, and Israel opened the war with a surprise air strike that destroyed most of the Egyptian air force on the ground. In six days Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the West Bank including East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. The war reshaped the Middle East, and the question of the occupied territories remains central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
