The Gaza War began when Hamas-led militants launched a large surprise attack from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, killing roughly 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking about 250 hostages. Israel responded with a sustained air and ground campaign in Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas and recovering the hostages. The fighting caused very large numbers of civilian deaths, widespread destruction and mass displacement, and led to a severe humanitarian crisis. The conflict drew in regional actors including Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iran, prompted ceasefire negotiations, and became the subject of proceedings before international courts. Its toll and its legal and political consequences remain widely contested.
