American Airlines Flight 11

11 September 2001

American Airlines Flight 11 was a scheduled passenger flight from Boston to Los Angeles operated with a Boeing 767, which was hijacked shortly after take-off by five men associated with al-Qaeda, led by Mohamed Atta. The hijackers killed crew members and passengers, took control of the cockpit, and flew the aircraft into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. It was the first of four planes hijacked in the September 11 attacks, and all those on board were killed, in addition to many people in the building. Flight attendants, including Betty Ong and Madeline Sweeney, gave information by telephone that helped to identify the hijackers.
