Russo-Ukrainian war

20 February 2014

The Russo-Ukrainian war began in late February 2014, when Russian forces without insignia took control of Crimea, a peninsula that belonged to Ukraine, after the Euromaidan protests had led to the fall of the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. Russia annexed Crimea in March after a referendum that most countries and the United Nations General Assembly did not recognise. Fighting then broke out in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists, in which Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down in July 2014. The Minsk agreements failed to bring a lasting peace. The conflict escalated into a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.
