Brexit

31 January 2020

Brexit was the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, which it had joined in 1973. It followed a referendum in June 2016, in which 52 percent of voters chose to leave and 48 percent to remain, after which Prime Minister David Cameron resigned. Negotiations were long and difficult: Theresa May's withdrawal agreement was rejected three times by Parliament, and her successor Boris Johnson agreed a revised deal. The United Kingdom left the EU at the end of January 2020 and stayed in the single market under a transition period until the end of that year, after which a Trade and Cooperation Agreement took effect. The status of Northern Ireland under the deal has remained a sensitive issue.
