United Airlines Flight 93

11 September 2001

United Airlines Flight 93 was a Boeing 757 flying from Newark to San Francisco that was hijacked by four al-Qaeda terrorists on 11 September 2001, as part of the attacks on the United States. After learning by phone about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, some of the passengers and crew decided to fight back and tried to retake the cockpit. The hijackers crashed the plane into a field near Shanksville in Pennsylvania, killing all 44 people on board. It is believed that the target was the Capitol or the White House in Washington. The Flight 93 National Memorial now stands at the site, and the passengers and crew are remembered for their courage.
