American Airlines Flight 77

11 September 2001

American Airlines Flight 77 was a Boeing 757 flying from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles when it was hijacked by five men connected to al-Qaeda, as part of the September 11 attacks. The hijackers took over the aircraft shortly after takeoff and turned it back toward Washington, and Hani Hanjour flew it into the western side of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. All 64 people on board died, including the hijackers, as well as 125 people in the building. Part of the Pentagon collapsed and a fire burned for days. The Pentagon Memorial, with a bench for each victim, was opened beside the building in 2008.
