The September 11 attacks were a coordinated series of terrorist hijackings carried out by nineteen members of the al-Qaeda network. Hijackers flew two airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, both of which collapsed, and a third into the Pentagon near Washington. A fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers tried to retake control. Nearly three thousand people died, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in history. The United States responded with the War on Terror, invading Afghanistan in October 2001 to remove the Taliban government that sheltered al-Qaeda, and later invading Iraq in 2003. The attacks also reshaped airport security, intelligence services and surveillance law around the world.
