Publication of Great Soviet Encyclopedia

1926

The Great Soviet Encyclopedia was the largest Russian-language encyclopedia and the main reference work of the Soviet Union, published in three successive editions. Its articles combined scholarly information with the ideology of the Communist Party, so that entries on history, philosophy and politics were shaped by the official line of the day. It was edited at first by Otto Schmidt, a mathematician and polar explorer. When figures fell from favour, subscribers were sent replacement pages to paste over their entries, a well-known case being the article on Lavrentiy Beria after his arrest in 1953. Much of the third edition was translated into English, and after the end of the Soviet Union its role was taken over by the Great Russian Encyclopedia.
