Construction of Park Güell

1926

Park Guell is a public park on Carmel Hill in Barcelona, designed by the architect Antoni Gaudi for the industrialist Eusebi Guell. It was planned as a garden estate with sixty plots for houses, in the spirit of the English garden city movement, but only a few houses were built, and the project failed commercially. The park is known for its colourful mosaics of broken tile, including the long serpentine bench and the salamander fountain at the entrance. Its columns and paths imitate natural forms in the architectural language of Catalan Modernisme. The city of Barcelona bought the property and opened it to the public, and it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Gaudi's works.
