Founding of Mercedes-Benz

1926

Mercedes-Benz is a German automobile brand that was founded in 1926 through the merger of two of the oldest car makers, Karl Benz's Benz & Cie and Gottlieb Daimler's Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, to form Daimler-Benz. The Mercedes name came from a 1901 Daimler car named after the daughter of the dealer Emil Jellinek, and the three-pointed star symbolized the aim of motorization on land, water and air. The company became known for engineering quality, luxury and safety innovations such as the crumple zone and the anti-lock braking system, and for its success in racing, including the Silver Arrows of the 1930s. After the war it rebuilt and expanded into a global group producing cars, vans and trucks. Its parent company is now called Mercedes-Benz Group.
