Founding of Lufthansa

1926

Lufthansa is the flag carrier and largest airline of Germany, and one of the largest in Europe. It was founded in Berlin in 1926 under the name Deutsche Luft Hansa by the merger of two earlier airlines, and it soon built an international network. After the Second World War the company was dissolved, and a new Lufthansa was set up in West Germany in the 1950s, flying from Frankfurt, which became its main hub. It was privatised in the 1990s and was a founding member of the Star Alliance in 1997. The Lufthansa Group has since bought other airlines such as Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.
