Origins of Nation of Islam

4 July 1930

The Nation of Islam is an African American religious and social movement that was founded in Detroit in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad. After Fard disappeared in 1934, Elijah Muhammad took over as leader and built it into an organisation of temples, schools and businesses, promoting Black self-reliance, discipline and separation from white society. Its teachings differ significantly from those of mainstream Islam, and it has drawn criticism for statements about race. Malcolm X and the boxer Muhammad Ali were among its best-known members before they left it. After Elijah Muhammad's death in 1975, his son Warith Deen Mohammed moved most followers towards Sunni Islam, while Louis Farrakhan rebuilt the Nation of Islam on its earlier lines.
