Establishment of Kruger National Park

1926

Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa, stretching along the border with Mozambique in the northeast of the country. Its origins lie in the Sabie Game Reserve, proclaimed in the late nineteenth century on the initiative of the Transvaal president Paul Kruger, after whom the park is named. The reserve was combined with others and became a national park under the National Parks Act of 1926. It is famous for the Big Five, namely lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceroses and buffalo, and for a rich variety of other animals and birds. Since the early 2000s, it has been part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, linking it with protected areas in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
