Construction of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport

1926

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport began as a race track that was converted to a landing field and leased by the city of Atlanta in the 1920s. It was originally known as Candler Field after Asa Candler, the former owner of the land and founder of Coca-Cola. It grew rapidly as air travel boomed and Atlanta became a transportation hub, and in the 1970s it was renamed in honour of Mayor William B. Hartsfield, with Maynard Jackson, the city's first Black mayor, added later. It is the main hub of Delta Air Lines. For many years it has been the busiest airport in the world by number of passengers.
