Construction of Giuseppe Meazza Stadium

19 September 1926

The Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, widely known as San Siro after the district of Milan where it stands, opened in September 1926. It was built at the initiative of Piero Pirelli, president of AC Milan, and originally served as the club's home. Inter Milan began sharing it in 1947, and in 1980 the stadium was officially renamed after Giuseppe Meazza, a famous Inter and Italy forward of the 1930s. It was extensively rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup, when a third tier and distinctive external towers were added. San Siro has hosted European Cup and Champions League finals and is known for its steep stands. Plans to replace it with a new stadium have been debated for years.
