Founding of ACF Fiorentina

1926

ACF Fiorentina is a professional football club from Florence, in Tuscany, which plays at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. It was formed through a merger of two older Florentine clubs, Club Sportivo Firenze and Palestra Ginnastica Fiorentina Libertas, at the initiative of the marquis Luigi Ridolfi Vay da Verrazzano, and it adopted the purple shirts that give the team its nickname, the Viola. Fiorentina won the Italian league in 1955–56 and 1968–69, took the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1960–61, and reached the European Cup final in 1957, where it lost to Real Madrid. Gabriel Batistuta was its star striker in the 1990s. The club went bankrupt in 2002 and was refounded, returning under its traditional name the following year.
