Construction of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

1916

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol began in 1916 as a military airfield in the Haarlemmermeer polder, southwest of Amsterdam, which was reclaimed land created by draining a lake in the 19th century. Civil aviation began there in the early 1920s, and the airport grew along with the Dutch airline KLM, which was founded in 1919 and has its main hub there. After being destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt and expanded in the postwar decades with new terminals and runways. Schiphol is among the busiest airports in Europe, and it is known for a design in which a single terminal building serves all passengers. Noise and environmental concerns have led to debate about limiting flights.
