The Pahlavi dynasty was the last royal dynasty to rule Iran. It was founded by Reza Khan, an army officer who took power in a coup, ended the Qajar dynasty and was crowned Reza Shah. He pursued modernisation, building railways, a national army and schools, but ruled autocratically. In 1941 the British and Soviets forced him to abdicate in favour of his son, Mohammad Reza Shah, who after the 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mossadegh ruled with growing authority, aided by the United States. His White Revolution brought land reform and rapid change, but also provoked opposition from clerics and others. Mass protests in 1978 and 1979 forced the Shah to leave Iran, and the monarchy was replaced by the Islamic Republic.
