Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic

from 12 March 1922 to 1 January 1936

The Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic was formed by the union of the Soviet republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and it joined the Soviet Union as one of its founding republics at the end of 1922. The Bolshevik government wanted to control the region more tightly and to dampen the nationalist rivalries between the three peoples. The federation had its capital in Tbilisi and operated as a single unit for foreign policy and economic matters. Its creation was resisted by some Georgian communists, in what became known as the Georgian affair, which troubled Lenin late in his life. It was abolished under the 1936 Soviet constitution, when the three republics became separate Soviet republics.
