Manchukuo

from 1 March 1932 to 18 August 1945

Manchukuo was a state created by Japan in Manchuria in northeastern China, after the Japanese army seized the region in the Mukden Incident of 1931. Japan presented it as an independent country and installed Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing dynasty, first as chief executive and then as emperor. In practice, the state was controlled by the Japanese military and its administrators, and it served as a source of raw materials and industry for Japan. The League of Nations refused to recognise it, and only a few states did. Soviet forces overran it in the closing days of the Second World War, and the territory returned to China.
