The Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic was the name of Estonia while it formed part of the Soviet Union, after the country was occupied and annexed in 1940 under the terms of the secret protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. It was occupied by Germany from 1941 to 1944 and then returned to Soviet control. Under Soviet rule, many Estonians were deported to Siberia, the economy was collectivised, and large numbers of workers from other Soviet republics settled in the country. Most Western countries never recognised the annexation. Estonia regained independence in 1991 during the collapse of the USSR, following the Singing Revolution.
