Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic

from 27 October 1924 to 26 December 1991

The Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic was one of the republics of the Soviet Union, created from the Turkestan region of Central Asia during the national delimitation in the 1920s, when Soviet authorities divided the region into republics based on ethnic groups. Its capital was Tashkent, and it included historic cities such as Samarkand and Bukhara. Under Soviet rule, the republic became a main producer of cotton, and the irrigation needed for this crop, drawing water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, contributed to the shrinking of the Aral Sea. Religion and traditional practices were suppressed. The republic declared independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved.
