The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was the name given to the South Slavic state, previously called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, after King Alexander I suspended the constitution and took personal control in a royal dictatorship. He tried to build a unified Yugoslav nation and divided the country into new provinces, but Croatian and other national grievances persisted. Alexander was assassinated in Marseille in 1934, and his cousin Prince Paul ruled as regent for the young Peter II. Yugoslavia was invaded by Germany and its allies in April 1941. After the war, the monarchy was abolished, and Josip Broz Tito's communists founded a federal republic.
