Founding of Moscow Exchange

2011

The Moscow Exchange is Russia's main stock exchange, created by the merger of two earlier trading platforms, the Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange, known as MICEX, and the Russian Trading System, or RTS. It trades shares, bonds, currencies, derivatives and commodities, and its main indexes are widely used as indicators of the Russian market. The exchange became a public company with a share offering in 2013. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, trading in shares was halted for weeks and Western sanctions cut many Russian institutions off from the global financial system. The exchange has since operated mainly for domestic investors.
