Founding of ASEAN

8 August 1967

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was created in Bangkok by five governments: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Its founding declaration spoke of economic growth, social progress and regional stability, at a time when the Cold War and the war in Vietnam shaped the neighbourhood. Brunei joined in 1984, and Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia followed in the 1990s, bringing membership to ten. ASEAN works by consensus and non-interference in members' internal affairs, a principle that has preserved cohesion but limited its ability to settle disputes. Over the decades it built a free trade area and a wider economic community, and it hosts regular summits with major powers such as China, Japan, India and the United States.
