Discovery of Gliese 667 Cc

2011

Gliese 667 Cc is a planet orbiting the red dwarf Gliese 667 C, part of a triple star system in the constellation Scorpius, about 23 light-years from Earth. It was found with the HARPS spectrograph at the European Southern Observatory, which detects planets through the small wobbles they cause in their star's motion. Gliese 667 Cc is a super-Earth, with a minimum mass a few times that of Earth, and it circles its star in about 28 days, in the zone where liquid water could exist on a rocky surface. Because its star is dim and the planet receives similar energy to Earth, it became one of the best-known candidates for potential habitability, though its true conditions remain uncertain.
