Release of Minecraft

2011

Minecraft is a sandbox video game in which players explore a world of blocks, gather resources, build structures and survive against hostile creatures. It was created by the Swedish programmer Markus Persson, known as Notch, and developed by his company Mojang. A prototype was released in 2009, and the full version came out in November 2011 after a long period of public testing. The game has no fixed goal, and players can play creatively or in a survival mode. It became one of the best-selling video games of all time, and in 2014 Microsoft bought Mojang. It has been used in education and has a vast community of modders.
