Founding of Arab League

22 March 1945

The Arab League was formed in Cairo by six independent Arab states: Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria, with Yemen joining soon after. It grew from discussions begun in the Alexandria Protocol of 1944, and it was one of the first regional organisations to emerge in the postwar period. Its stated aims were to strengthen ties among members, coordinate policies and safeguard their independence, and its early focus was opposition to a Jewish state in Palestine. It later grew to twenty-two members, based in Cairo. Egypt was suspended from 1979 to 1989 after signing a peace treaty with Israel, and Syria was suspended in 2011 and readmitted in 2023. The League has often been criticised for the limited impact of its decisions.
