The Tunisian revolution was a wave of protests that overthrew President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who had ruled for more than two decades. The unrest was set off by the self-immolation of the street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi in Sidi Bouzid, after officials confiscated his goods, and spread through the country as people protested at unemployment, corruption and repression. Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia in January 2011 after demonstrations reached the capital. The uprising became known as the Jasmine Revolution, and it inspired the wider Arab Spring in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and elsewhere. Tunisia held free elections and adopted a new constitution in 2014, but later turned away from democracy.
