Founding of World Trade Organization

1 January 1995

The World Trade Organization began operating at the start of 1995 as the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, a set of rules created in 1947. It was established by the Marrakesh Agreement, the result of the Uruguay Round of negotiations, and it covers trade in services and intellectual property as well as goods. Based in Geneva, it provides a forum for negotiating trade rules and operates a dispute settlement system, in which member countries can bring complaints against each other. China joined in 2001. More than 160 countries are members, though attempts to conclude a broad new trade deal in the Doha Round stalled, and the dispute system has been weakened since the United States blocked appointments to its appeals body.
