Rise of Hamas

10 December 1987

Hamas was founded in Gaza in December 1987, at the start of the First Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. It grew out of the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, and one of its leading founders was the cleric Ahmed Yassin. Its 1988 charter called for the destruction of Israel, and it combined a social-welfare network with an armed wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, which carried out attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers. In 2006 it won the Palestinian legislative elections, and in 2007 it seized control of the Gaza Strip after fighting with Fatah. The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and several other countries designate it a terrorist organisation, while its supporters regard it as a resistance movement.
