Arab Spring

from 18 December 2010 to 1 December 2012

The Arab Spring was a wave of protests, uprisings and civil conflicts that spread across the Arab world, sparked by the self-immolation of the Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi in Sidi Bouzid in protest at harassment and hardship. President Ben Ali of Tunisia fled within weeks, and protests soon toppled Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and led to a civil war in Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed. Uprisings also shook Yemen, Bahrain and Syria, where the unrest turned into a long civil war. The outcomes varied widely, from a fragile democratic transition in Tunisia to renewed authoritarian rule in Egypt and prolonged conflict in other countries.
