Release of Messenger

2011

Messenger is an instant messaging app and service developed by Facebook, now part of Meta Platforms. It grew out of the chat function on Facebook, which became a standalone mobile app for smartphones in 2011 after Facebook acquired the messaging startup Beluga. A few years later Facebook required mobile users to install it in order to send messages from their phones, moving messaging out of the main app. Messenger added voice and video calls, group chats, stickers, payments and chatbots for businesses, and it became one of the world's most widely used messaging platforms. In the 2020s it introduced end-to-end encryption by default and re-merged some features with Facebook.
