11 November 2004

Yasser Arafat died on 11 November 2004 in Hôpital d'instruction des armées Percy, aged 75. A Palestinian political leader, Arafat co-founded the Fatah movement in the late 1950s and became chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1969. Under his leadership the PLO carried out armed attacks against Israel while also seeking international recognition for the Palestinian cause, and he addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. In 1993, after secret talks, he signed the Oslo Accords with Israel and shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. He died in Paris in 2004, and the cause of his death remains disputed.
