Gaza genocide is the term used by some to describe Israel's conduct in the Gaza Strip during the war that followed the Hamas-led attack of 7 October 2023. The campaign caused very large numbers of civilian deaths, destruction of much of the territory's housing and infrastructure, mass displacement and severe shortages of food and medical care. Several human rights organisations, UN experts and scholars have concluded that the conduct amounts to genocide, while Israel and some of its allies strongly reject the charge and say it is acting in self-defence against Hamas. South Africa brought a case against Israel before the International Court of Justice in late 2023, which ordered provisional measures. The characterisation remains contested.
