Discovery of Bebhionn

12 December 2004

Bebhionn is a small irregular moon of Saturn, about six kilometers across, found in images obtained in late 2004 by a team led by Scott Sheppard. It orbits the planet at a great distance in the same direction as Saturn's rotation and belongs to the Gallic group, along with moons such as Albiorix and Tarvos. The names in this group come from Gallic and Celtic mythology, and Bebhionn is a figure of Irish legend. Moons of this kind were probably captured by the planet after it had formed.
