The Falklands War was a ten-week conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, a British-governed territory in the South Atlantic that Argentina also claims. On 2 April 1982 the Argentine military junta, led by General Leopoldo Galtieri, invaded and occupied the islands. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent a naval task force, which retook South Georgia and landed troops at San Carlos in May. After battles at Goose Green and around Port Stanley, Argentine forces surrendered on 14 June. The defeat contributed to the fall of the junta and the return of democracy in Argentina, while the victory strengthened Thatcher's position at home.
