2004 United States presidential election

2 November 2004

The 2004 United States presidential election was won by the incumbent Republican president, George W. Bush, who defeated the Democratic senator from Massachusetts, John Kerry. The campaign was dominated by the war on terror, the war in Iraq and the economy, and by controversy over the candidates' military records. The result depended on Ohio, where Bush won by a narrow margin, giving him a majority of the Electoral College, and he also won the popular vote, the first Republican to do so since 1988. Turnout was higher than in recent elections, and the vote highlighted the divide between the red and blue states.
