Yom Kippur War

from 6 October 1973 to 26 October 1973

The Yom Kippur War began when Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, which also fell in the month of Ramadan. Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and broke through Israeli defences in Sinai, while Syria attacked in the Golan Heights. Israel recovered, pushed Syria back and crossed the canal into Egypt. The United States airlifted supplies to Israel and the Soviet Union supported its allies, bringing the superpowers close to confrontation, and a UN-brokered ceasefire ended the fighting. The war led to the Arab oil embargo and, in time, to negotiations between Egypt and Israel, the Camp David Accords and the peace treaty of 1979.
