The 2020 United States presidential election was held during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led many states to expand voting by mail. Former vice president Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee, defeated the Republican incumbent, Donald Trump, winning more than 81 million votes, the most ever received by a presidential candidate, and a majority of the Electoral College. Kamala Harris became the first woman elected vice president. Trump and his allies made claims of widespread fraud, which were rejected by courts and election officials, and on 6 January 2021 a crowd of his supporters attacked the Capitol as Congress met to certify the result. Biden took office on 20 January 2021.
