The 2024 United States presidential election was held on 5 November 2024 and was the 60th presidential election in the country's history. The Republican candidate, former president Donald Trump, running with Senator J. D. Vance, defeated the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, who had replaced President Joe Biden as the party's candidate in July after he ended his campaign following a poor debate performance. The campaign was marked by two assassination attempts on Trump, his criminal convictions in New York and debates about the economy, immigration and abortion. Trump won the Electoral College and the national popular vote, and Republicans also gained control of the Senate and kept the House. Trump took office for his second, non-consecutive term in January 2025.
