Orange Revolution

from 22 November 2004 to 23 January 2005

The Orange Revolution was a series of mass protests in Ukraine that followed the presidential election run-off, in which Viktor Yanukovych, supported by the outgoing government, was declared the winner over the opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko. Observers reported widespread fraud, and hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Kyiv's Independence Square, wearing the orange colour of Yushchenko's campaign. Yushchenko himself had been poisoned with dioxin earlier in the campaign. The Supreme Court annulled the result and ordered a repeat vote, which Yushchenko won, and he took office in January 2005. The revolution was peaceful, and it was seen as a step towards democracy, although later political divisions and rivalries limited the reforms.
