Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic

from 1 January 1919 to 25 August 1991

The Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was a republic of the Soviet Union, covering the territory of modern Belarus. It was proclaimed in early 1919 in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, and in 1922 it became one of the founding republics of the USSR. Western Belarus was part of Poland between the wars, and was added to the republic after the Soviet invasion in 1939. During the Second World War the territory suffered terribly under German occupation, and a quarter of its population is estimated to have died. The republic was a founding member of the United Nations in 1945, with a seat of its own. After the disaster at Chernobyl in 1986, large areas were contaminated. It declared independence as Belarus in 1991.
