The Weimar Republic was the German state that followed the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the end of the First World War, declared in Berlin and named after the city where its constitution was drafted in 1919. It was a democracy with a strong president, a parliament elected by proportional representation and a progressive constitution. The new state was burdened by defeat, the Treaty of Versailles, political violence and hyperinflation in 1923, while the 1920s also brought a vibrant culture of art, film and science. The Great Depression deepened extremism, and after Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1933, the Nazis dismantled the republic.
