The League of Nations was an international organisation established after the First World War by the peace settlement of Paris, in the hope of preventing future wars through collective security and arbitration. The American president Woodrow Wilson was a leading advocate, but the United States Senate refused to ratify the treaty, and the country never joined. Based in Geneva, the League settled some minor border disputes and did valuable humanitarian and health work. It failed to stop aggression in the 1930s, when Japan invaded Manchuria, Italy invaded Ethiopia and Germany rearmed. After the outbreak of the Second World War it had no real role, and it was formally dissolved in 1946, transferring its remaining functions to the United Nations.
