Rise of House of Windsor

17 July 1917

The House of Windsor is the royal house of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. It was created by a proclamation of King George V in July 1917, when anti-German feeling during the First World War made the dynasty's previous name, Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, politically awkward. The name Windsor was taken from Windsor Castle, and members of the family with German titles gave them up. The house has included George V, Edward VIII, whose abdication in 1936 caused a constitutional crisis, George VI, Elizabeth II and Charles III. Over the century the monarchy adapted to the decline of the British Empire and the growth of the Commonwealth.
