The Einstein Tower is an astrophysical observatory in the Albert Einstein Science Park in Potsdam, Germany, built to test Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. It houses a solar telescope, designed to measure the gravitational redshift of sunlight, which general relativity predicted, and the project was driven by the astronomer Erwin Finlay-Freundlich. The building was designed by the architect Erich Mendelsohn and is a landmark of expressionist architecture, with a sculptural, flowing form, though it was constructed of brick and concrete plastered to look as if it were molded. Observations at the tower did not at first confirm the redshift convincingly, but it has been used for solar research ever since.
